History
SV PaPa is a very rare 1985 Nantucket Island 38, one of the last of five built. Approximately 50 were built in the 33 version. Designer, Peter Cole, whom was also part of the design team which designed 12 meter contenders for the America's Cup yacht races, designed several sailing yachts, many of which were contenders in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. Cole's designs are known to be well founded and fast. His ability to think outside the box is legendary. Safety and speed are known to be his hallmarks. Functionality and fun also played a large part in his designs. Unique to the Nantucket Island is the lead filled FRP keel. There are no keel bolts that can corrode, nor is there any possibility for the keel to dislodge and fall off in grounding. Nantucket islands are built in two halves and are bonded together. There is 8800lbs of ballast which fills the void in the keel which is then glassed over. If the keel strikes and underwater object and is holed, it is sealed so that no sea water can leak into the bilge.
The flush deck is solid fiberglass with no wood core to rot out. Thus, no soft spots will be found in the decks. Nantucket Islands are designed to withstand the rigors of a life at sea and hold up to the ravages of time. Nantucket Island yachts are hand laid FRP and are very strong. The hull thickness ranges from 1 inch to ¾. Deck thickness ranges from ¾ to ½. The build quality equates to an extremely strong offshore bluewater cruising sailboat which will take you anywhere safely with class and comfort.
Nantucket Island yachts were built in Taiwan by Ho Hsing FRP, Co LTD. Ho Hsing specialized in fiberglass reinforced plastics, constructing FRP bus bodies, docks, septic tanks, large storage tanks, swimming pools, and modular restrooms and bath enclosures. Ho Hsing was operated by Archie Chen and employed over 300 craftsman in several facilities. Their vast experience in FRP and excellent reputation for producing high quality products resulted in solicitations to construct western designed yachts. Another division was added called Ho Hsing FRP Shipyards which produced high end yachts such as the Alban 36 trawler, Sundowner Tugs, 30 and 36, Nantucket Island yachts, 33 and 38. They also had built a fine carpentry and joinery shop where they would take teak logs, saw them in their mills, kiln dry them, mill the lumber and create what many customers referred to as floating furniture. The joinery work produced was exquisite and exemplary in fit and finish, resulting in an end product that was nothing short of first class. Nantucket Island yachts reflect this fact in they have warm and inviting interiors. Exterior woodwork was kept to a minimum to provide a yacht that did not require high maintenance, but provided a distinguished appearance similar to Hans Christian, Westsail and other fine blue water cruisers.

Above Deck
The Nantucket Island center cockpit design places the captain and crew in the safest and driest place on deck. This spacious cockpit provides ample space to seat six people, plus the captain quite comfortably. There is also plenty of space to sprawl out and take a nap, or sleep outdoors inside the safety of the cockpit, if the desire arises.
The flush deck provides ample space for eight deck chairs for entertaining outdoors. You will enjoy the spacious accommodations aboard a Nantucket Island. Offshore, sail handling is a breeze as there is little to get in your way. In rough weather your dinghy can be stored on deck versus the rear davits, providing additional safety from being pooped by an aft rogue wave. There is also room to set up two deck chairs aft for crew to enjoy the ride. Turn the deck chairs facing astern and you're able to keep an eye on your fishing lines trailing behind, as you wait for supper to take the hook.
If you would like to take a dip, there is a swim platform mounted on the stern, with a swim ladder to make easy work of getting back onboard. You will also enjoy the functionality of a Nantucket Island on deck.

Below Decks
The interior layout of the Nantucket Island yacht is not only exquisite but very functional. Few sailing lots in this size can match the feeling one has below deck. The high freeboard and flush deck result in good headroom throughout the interior. Upon entering, one gets the feeling that you are aboard a much larger yacht. The interior of the Nantucket Island 33 feels larger than most 40 sailboats. The Nantucket Island 38' seems more spacious than most 50 sailboats. The interior space is very well thought out and comfortable. There is plenty of room for guests, as well as entertaining on board this fine yacht.
For long-distance bluewater cruising, there is nothing like an aft cabin master suite, with ample headroom and ventilation, to make the trip more enjoyable. Four opening ports provide great crossflow ventilation as well as the ability to peer outside and see what is going on to port, starboard and aft, a large opening deck hatch allows one to look up at the stars at night, while lying in the masters berth. This hatch also allows the warmer air to escape as it is replaced by the cooler air coming in through the open ports in the hull nearest to the cooler water. Four, 3-speed, 12 V fans provide additional circulation, installed near each port. A Mermaid heat pump provides both cool and hot air to the aft master suite area with its own thermostat control. This allows the captain or first mate to set the temperature independently from the forward heat pump in the V berth and salon area. There is also a settee adjacent to the master's berth which provides a nice place to sit down while getting dressed, or to sprawl out in the privacy of the master's suite and enjoy a good book. The settee can also provide a berth for a child to sleep next to their parents, or a comfy place for a short nap. Storage space is abundant in the master's suite. Every square inch is utilized in this well thought out, comfortable and functional aft cabin. A large closet provides ample room to hang clothing which well ventilated, keeping your clothes looking wrinkle free during your shore excursions. 12 LED lights provide plenty of lighting, even inside the closets. They are dimmable and provide blue night lighting for ambience. Linens, sheets, blankets and towels are included in the sale of this vessel.
Moving forward from the master suite is a large head located adjacent to the companionway between bulkheads. Two raised panel teak doors provide privacy. One closes off the amid ship area, the other closes off the aft cabin area. This area provides plenty of space for a couple to shower together if desired. Vacuflush heads provide worry free waste extraction. A monitor tells you how much waste is in the tank. Stainless Steel handrail provides safety in rough weather and an opening porthole provides ventilation.
Moving forward from the companionway, adjacent to the master suite head, you will find the navigation station to your right. Companionway steps with SS handrails lead up to the center cockpit area amid ship. To the left is the galley area.
The navigation area provides Blue Sea panels for control of all 12 DC volt systems. To your left you will find the control system for the 8KW Phasor generator as well as the Blue Sea 120 V breakers for the generator and shore power systems. A 3000 watt Xantrex Freedom 458 inverter/100 amp battery charger, is adjacent to the AC control center under the salon settee. There is an opening port located in the navigation station with a 3 speed, 12 V fan mounted on the bulkhead which provides additional ventilation to this area. A red/white LED map light preserves night vision during offshore passage making. Under the navigation seat you will find two lifeline AGM batteries. A BlueSky solar boost MPPT charge controller feeds solar power to the battery banks. Four more Lifeline AGM batteries are under the companionway steps. Two more AGM starting batteries are located under the berth in the master suite.
One additional AGM battery is located under the V berth in the forward cabin which feeds power to the SidePower SE 80/185T bow thruster and the Maxwell 1500 windless. All battery banks have individual control systems and breakers and are fed by the central 100 AMP charging systems. A Xantrex Control Freedom Panel provides inverter/charge information. A Xantrex Link Pro provides battery charge state information. These are located next to the navigation station DC Control center.

Engine Room
The Nantucket Island engine room is centrally located under the central cockpit. Access to this compartment is from several locations. It is sound proofed and well ventilated. The power plants in the engine room can be hoisted out from above as the floor of the cockpit is removable. Its central location provides an ideal place to locate heavy equipment, providing good balance and access to the Nantucket Island yacht. Ample access to the house batteries and front of the engines is achieved by removing the companionway steps and forward access panel located behind the steps. There are upper and lower removable access panels on the port and starboard side of the engine room, in the head area companion way and from the galley area. Additional access to the dripless propeller shaft seal, transmission sea water cooling strainer baskets and through hulls is achieved from the aft cabin access door. Both the propulsion engine and gensets are fresh water cooled utilizing a heat exchanger system to prevent internal engine corrosion. The engines and drivetrain are fully and easily accessible to facilitate easy regular maintenance. The engine compartment is well lit utilizing LED lighting in multiple locations. Gauges are installed in the cockpit which allow for engine monitoring.
Power plants were recently upgraded and are brand new Phasor components which utilize Kubota marinized diesel engines. Kubota replacement parts are readily available worldwide. Kubota diesels are extremely durable, efficient and easy to work on. The 49HP PHRP-4 49.03 propulsion engine has approximately 300 hours on it. K3-8.0 model 8kW genset has less than 1000 hours. Both have been systematically maintained with oil changes at every 100 hour mark, as well as at the end of the season, regardless of hours used. A Racor fuel filter system provides fuel pre- treatment and water separation, additional filters provide further protection. Lucas fuel and oil treatment has been used since the break-in period. A new ZF 25 M marine transmission from Germany was installed during upgrade. The 8.5 kW genset installed above the 45HP propulsion systems are stacked in the engine room, saving space. 80 gallons of diesel fuel are carried and monitored with a fuel gauge. Many spare parts, filters, transfer pumps, as well as all necessary tools for servicing and maintaining equipment, a huge selection of stainless steel screws, bolts and hardware are also included in the sale of PaPa.

Galley Area
The galley on the Nantucket Island yacht is no exception to the rule of form following function rule which was applied throughout the spectacular sailing yacht. The galley is much larger than one would expect on a yacht in this class. C shaped, the gallery sink faces aft. Both the sink and faucet have been recently upgraded. The sink is black granite and very deep. The faucet is euro style with the adjustable and extendable water spray head makes cleanup a breeze. Two overhead 60 LED lights provide plenty of light to the galley area. Two additional LED white/red lights can be utilized for additional lighting or preserving night vision during offshore passage making. Additional LED lighting near the galley sink does likewise. Refrigeration is a dual Sea Frost System with separate freezer which is larger than most refrigerators. The freezer has two plates, one on each side, which keeps internal temperatures cold enough to make ice and keep ice cream! The refrigerator is also quite large and runs cold enough to freeze water next to the single plate. The freezer and the refrigeration systems are independent of each other and quite efficient running on 12 V. If one fails, the other will keep functioning, meaning you will not lose 100% of your cooling capacity, only 50%, allowing you to preserve your food supply until repairs can be made. Spare parts and recharging system is included with the sale of this vessel.
Counter space is ample and adequate compared to many other yachts in this class. A Force 10, three burner gimbaled propane range with large oven provides the cook with the ability to prepare fine gourmet meals. A separate induction 120 V cooktop provides further cooking abilities and a back-up if you run out of propane. An automated LPG sensor provides safety shut off in the event of an LPG/propane leak. The galley is fully equipped with pots, pans, cooking utensils, dishes, cups and silverware which are included in the sale. A Kumma LPG grill is mounted on the aft of the vessel, with dual fiberglass LPG tanks.
Nearby is a large pantry built into the galley counter which provides ample storage for dry goods. A serving counter between the salon and the galley provides separation from the salon, as well as space to serve food. It is open and airy so the cook does not feel isolated.
Two opening portholes provide adequate ventilation. A 3-speed, 12 V fan provides additional airflow at each porthole. The rear AC heat pump in the aft master suite also feeds hot or cool air into the galley area keeping it comfortable, whether you are in the tropics or the arctic. The AC heat pump in the forward VBerth also feeds hot or cool area into the salon as well, keeping it comfortable even while cooking. There are Stainless Steel handholds installed on the headliner and other areas to provide safety and a secure place to hang on to in rough weather and high seas.

V Berth
Moving forward to the V berth is a recessed, raised panel pocket door which slides into the forward bulkhead. This provides lockable privacy to the occupants in the V berth area. A separate head with shower provides additional comfort and privacy. A Vacuflush head alleviates the headaches associated with typical marine heads. Adjacent to the head is a hanging closet. A Mermaid heat pump/AC unit is installed in the upper part of this closet space which provides hot or cold air to the V berth area, as well as the salon. The V Berth is quite large and spacious with two, full length shelves on either side for storing gear. Hammocks are installed on either side with which to store clothes, allowing good airflow and preventing mildew buildup. Sail lockers are under the V berth. The Side Power SE80/185T series bow thruster and AGM battery is also under the V berth, which provides DC to both the windless and thruster. This battery is charged by the central charge controller and protected via a breaker and shut off system.
